Paint Systems & Coastal Performance

Paint Options: Kynar® vs. SMP

Kynar® (PVDF): Premium paint system with superior fade resistance and color stability. Best for residential homes and high-visibility projects in direct sun and salt air.

SMP (Silicone-Modified Polyester): Cost-effective with standard fade resistance. Great for barns, sheds, and utility buildings where cost matters more than long-term color retention.

Coastal Performance & Hurricane Considerations

Charleston and the Lowcountry put metal panels through humidity, salt air, hurricanes, and high sun exposure. Choosing the right combination of metal type, gauge, and finish makes the difference between a roof that lasts 50 years and one that fails early.

  • Galvalume® steel resists corrosion better than standard galvanized in salt air.
  • 26ga or 24ga is recommended for high-wind hurricane-prone areas.
  • Kynar® finish holds color through years of UV exposure.
  • Proper installation by a qualified contractor is critical for hurricane performance.

Buyer FAQs & Project Planning Tips

Choosing the Right Panel for Your Project

The right panel depends on what you're building, your budget, and the look you want.

  • Most homes: Master Rib (affordable, durable) or Standing Seam (premium, architectural)
  • Coastal & historic homes: 5-V Crimp (classic look)
  • Modern homes & barndominiums: Board & Batten siding (vertical clean profile)
  • Shops, garages, agricultural: Master Rib in 26ga or 29ga is most cost-effective
  • High-wind / hurricane areas: Step up to 26ga or 24ga
Selecting Gauge and Finish for Coastal Durability

For Charleston-area coastal exposure, our recommendation is:

  • Galvalume® steel base — better corrosion resistance than standard galvanized
  • 26ga minimum for any home in direct salt air; 24ga for premium projects
  • Kynar® paint finish on any colored panel facing direct sun and salt
